Commitment to Our Communities

At Astellas, we turn innovative science into new solutions for patient communities with high unmet medical needs. Just as important is the intensive focus we place on being a responsible and active partner in the communities where we work and live. This includes our growing efforts to confront the public health challenges posed by COVID-19 through Astellas and the Astellas Global Health Foundation, and steadfast engagement in supporting efforts for racial justice and equality. Our combined and continuous commitment reflects the high value we place on taking meaningful actions intended to support our local and global communities and contribute to the safety and well-being of our employees, healthcare professionals and partners. Our latest efforts include:

1. Partnering with COVID-19 Relief Organizations

Astellas is helping several humanitarian organizations to  aid in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19 in affected communities, through corporate donations to Americares, the American Red Cross and Disaster Relief. We also have donated personal protective equipment(PPE) and thermometers; coordinated food and blood drives; and advocated for legislation to help improve patient access to care and medication. 2. Supporting Racial Justice and Equality

As part of our broader commitment as One Astellas in supporting racial justice and equality, we have taken several actions to support non-profit organizations in furthering their important work in communities across the country. Astellas is distributing $150,000 in corporate donations to support non-profit organizations working for racial justice and equality. This includes donations to non-profit organizations, such as select Urban League affiliates, Breakthrough and Embarc to help further their important work.

3. Providing Emergency Funding for Vulnerable Global Communities

In addition, the Astellas Global Health Foundation is providing $2 million in emergency funding for projects focused on improved healthcare infrastructure, COVID-19 training and education in low-income countries. Funding for these projects – awarded to CARE, International Medical Corps, the Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning and World Vision International – intend to help prevent the immediate spread and long-term effects of COVID-19 in vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities in South Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ghana, Ethiopia and Nigeria. Additionally, a portion of funds previously awarded by the Foundation to AMPATH and UNICEF were reallocated to help support COVID-19 efforts in western Kenya and the Dominican Republic, respectively. Learn more about the these and other Foundation efforts in building toward “One World, A Healthier Tomorrow.”

4. Employee Giving to Support Underserved Communities

In addition, more than 300 Astellas employees participated in our recent YouGiveGoods campaign and matching gift opportunity. As a result, donations of more than 35,000 items, valued at more than $96,000, were made to 11 non-profit organizations to support the growing needs of communities affected by racial injustice and inequality. Among recipients of the donations were Cradles to Crayons, select Urban League affiliates, and several national and local food banks. To view our latest Statements, click here.
